What are Short Names (8.3 Filename Format)?
Short names are legacy DOS-style names limited to 8 characters + 3-character extension (e.g., PROGRA~1 for "Program Files").
Step 01: Find Short Name of a File/Folder
Open cmd.exe
Navigate to your desired location and execute following command:
DIR /X /A

• Short names are useful for batch scripts and when paths contain spaces
• Gzipped .exe files (.exe.gz) cannot be executed directly - use only for backup/storage
• To restore: gunzip filename.exe.gz
• To ungzip multiple files: gunzip *.exe.gz
• Short names reduce from long path like "C:\Program Files" to "C:\PROGRA~1"
• Useful in DOS batch files and legacy scripts that don't handle spaces
